Asheville, NC Group Trip: Fri Oct 10 – Sun Oct 12

Trip snapshot

Dates Friday Oct 10 – Sunday Oct 12 (2 nights)
Group size 6 (Maya, Jordan, Priya, Sam, Leo, Tess)
Lodging 3-bedroom rental house, West Asheville
Transport 2 cars from Charlotte, leaving Friday ~3:00 pm (about a 2–2.5 hr drive, estimate)
Total shared spend $1,347.50
Average per person $224.58 (simple average. Shares differ because of Leo's half house share, the separate gas cars and Tess skipping the brewery tour)
  • Friday: Five of you arrive around 5:15–5:45 pm. Friday afternoon traffic leaving Charlotte could push that later, so keep the evening easy.
  • Saturday: Leo arrives in the morning. I assumed he's there by about 9:30 am, and the hike leaves after he gets in.
  • Saturday dinner: Tess doesn't drink. The brewery tour is the one drinking-focused event, and she isn't paying for it. Tess is a natural pick for driver to dinner, but only if she offers. Otherwise use a rideshare.

Day-by-day plan

Parkway status (checked on the National Park Service road status page, updated Oct 28, 2026): The Blue Ridge Parkway is open from the Folk Art Center north through the Craggy Gardens area to Mount Mitchell State Park. The stretch south of Asheville past Mount Pisgah to Graveyard Fields is also open. Explore Asheville and a local hiking blog say the Craggy Gardens Picnic Area is still closed after Hurricane Helene, and some sections of Craggy Gardens Trail are closed too. The Visitor Center and Craggy Pinnacle Trail are open. Conditions change fast, so check the NPS road status page the morning you go.

Time Plan Where/notes Est. cost pp

10:00 am Drive to Craggy Gardens About 40 min from Asheville on the Parkway. Pack picnic supplies and layers $0 (no Parkway entrance fee, estimate)
10:45 am–12:45 pm The hike: Craggy Pinnacle Trail, plus open parts of Craggy Gardens Trail if time allows Pinnacle is about 1.4 mi round trip, moderate, with a steep rocky climb to big 360° views. It gets slippery when wet. The open Craggy Gardens Trail sections from the Visitor Center are moderately easy, about 2 mi round trip if fully open. Together that's a good half-day hike, not an all-day one $0
1:00 pm Parkway picnic The Craggy Gardens Picnic Area is closed, so use an overlook pull-off or the Visitor Center area if allowed. Pack out all trash Covered in picnic split
1:45 pm Drive back to the house Leave time for photo stops at overlooks $0

~3:30–5:30 pm Tess's free time A nap, a book, a coffee shop or a solo stroll. Or she can join the group with non-alcoholic drinks if she wants ~$0–10 (estimate)
5:30–7:00 pm Recharge at the house Eat a snack and drink water before dinner $0
7:30 pm Nicer group dinner Reserve ahead for 6. Saturdays in October are busy in Asheville. Pick a place with good non-alcoholic drinks for Tess. Rideshare or a sober volunteer driver ~$60–90 incl. tip (estimate)

Rainy or foggy backup: At high elevation, the views at Craggy can disappear in fog or rain. Swap in a lower, sheltered walk such as the Bent Creek Trail or Hard Times Trail at the NC Arboretum. Check the Arboretum's hours and parking fee before going. A second option is the Mount Pisgah Trail (about 2.4 mi, moderate, roughly 45 min south on the Parkway) if the weather is clearer to the south. Keep the brewery tour and dinner as planned.
