Dino Soccer Learning Pack: 2nd Grade
Parent Guide
Assumptions: This pack is for 2nd grade and covers only the skills you asked for: adding and subtracting within 100, plus telling time. Because your daughter is a strong reader, the reading comes through a story and word problems instead of separate reading pages. Regrouping (borrowing) has its own gentle, step-by-step page instead of being mixed in everywhere. The rest of the pack stays at a 2nd-grade level. Pages are kept short (8 items each).
Skills covered (skills commonly taught in 2nd grade):
- Adding within 100, with and without regrouping
- Subtracting within 100 without regrouping
- Subtracting with regrouping ("trading a ten"), with step-by-step support
- Telling time to the nearest 5 minutes, including "half past" and "quarter past"
- Solving one- and two-step word problems
- Reading a short story and answering questions about it
How to use it:
- Pace: One page a day works well. Do a few days a week, or whatever fits your summer.
- Time: About 10 minutes per page. Stop early if she's tired. There's no rush.
- Suggested order: The pages build on each other, so Page 3 (regrouping) comes after two easier warm-up pages. You can redo Page 3 later if it helps.
- Clocks: The clock questions describe where the hands point. A real clock, a toy clock, or a quick drawing makes these much easier and more fun.
- Printing: Print at 100% (not "fit to page"). If your printer splits a worksheet across two sheets, add a page break before each "Page X" heading, or print one page at a time.
3 tips to keep it fun and low-pressure:
- Make it a game, not a test. Use a soccer timer ("Can you finish before halftime?") or let her be the "coach" who checks your answers on a problem or two.
- For regrouping, use real objects. Ten crayons bundled with a rubber band make a "ten." Unbundling it is "trading a ten." Seeing it often removes the frustration.
- Celebrate effort. Have her color the star at the end of each page, and praise how she worked ("You didn't give up on that one!") as much as getting it right.
