Your Anniversary Letter
For Luis ("Lu"), on your 15th wedding anniversary.
The Letter
Dear Lu,
Fifteen years married. I keep doing the math and it still surprises me, but here we are.
It all started with a pen. You leaned over in the college library, asked if you could borrow one, and then just... kept it. I never got it back. I have also never let you forget it, pen thief. What I didn't know that day was that you'd be walking off with a lot more than a pen. I've never wanted any of it back.
Then came our first date. Your car broke down, so the big plan turned into cheap tacos and a long walk. It could have been a disaster. Instead it's still one of my favorite nights, because it showed me early that with you, the plan doesn't matter much. The company does.
The summer after our wedding, we drove across the country in a van with no AC. In summer. Across an entire country. On paper it sounds like a test of a brand-new marriage. Somehow it felt more like the start of everything.
And when I lost my job in 2020, you didn't give speeches. You made pancakes, every single morning, and every morning you said, "We'll figure it out." Some days I needed those words more than the pancakes. You said them like a plain fact, and you were right. We did figure it out. I've never forgotten how steady you were for me.
That's who you are, Lu. You're the dad who sings badly in the car on purpose just to hear Ana and Teo groan, and you look so proud of yourself every time. You're the husband who still tucks notes into my lunch bag after fifteen years, so a regular Tuesday lunch turns into the best part of my day. You make our ordinary life feel full and funny and safe.
I don't know exactly what the next fifteen years hold. I'm hoping for more terrible car concerts, more notes, more kids rolling their eyes at us, and maybe a vehicle with working air conditioning. Whatever comes, I know we'll figure it out, together.
Happy anniversary. You can keep the pen.
Love always, Marisol

Sweet & simple: Lu, fifteen years with you have been the best years of my life. Thank you for every note, every pancake, and every ordinary day you made better. Happy anniversary. I'd marry you all over again. Love always, Marisol
Playful: To my favorite pen thief: fifteen years later, I'm still waiting on that pen. At this point I'm charging interest, payable in tacos and one (1) car concert the kids don't groan through. Good luck with that last one. Happy anniversary! Love always, Marisol
Heartfelt: In 2020, you made me pancakes every morning and told me, "We'll figure it out." You were right, and you always are when it counts. Fifteen years in, you're still my favorite place to land. Happy anniversary, Lu. Love always, Marisol
Make It Yours
- Tape a pen inside the card (or wrap one as a tiny gift) with a note like "Returned with 15 years of interest." It pays off the pen thief joke nicely.
- Add one real lunch-bag note. If you've saved one, or remember a favorite line he wrote, quote it in the paragraph about his notes. Only you know those words.
- Read the last two lines aloud. "Happy anniversary. You can keep the pen." works best said out loud with a smile.
- Handwrite the card message you choose. The playful one is a fun one to slip into his lunch bag for a change.
