Robert "Bobby" James Delgado 1947 – 2025
Robert "Bobby" James Delgado, 77, of Fresno, California, passed away peacefully on January 18, 2025, at Saint Agnes Medical Center with his family by his side.
Bobby was born in 1947 in Bakersfield, California, to Manuel and Josefina Delgado, the oldest of six children. In 1966, he joined the U.S. Army and served until 1969, stationed in Germany.
Bobby spent 34 years as a mechanic and later owned his own shop, Delgado Auto Repair on Blackstone Avenue. He could diagnose any engine just by listening to it. A cough, a knock, or a whine told him everything he needed to know. His work didn't stop at the shop door, either. If a neighbor's car was acting up, Bobby fixed it, and he wouldn't take a dime for it. His philosophy, which he applied to engines and pretty much everything else, was simple: "It's not broke, it just needs attention."
He gave that same attention to the kids of Fresno. For 20 years, Bobby coached Little League with the Fresno Tigers.
Bobby's idea of a good life was easy to spot. It looked like a quiet morning fishing at Millerton Lake, tri-tip on the grill every Sunday, and the Dodgers on the radio. He never missed a game. He was also, by any honest measure, a terrible singer. That never once stopped him from belting out Elvis at full volume, and his family wouldn't have had it any other way.
Bobby's faith was a steady part of his life. He was an active member of St. Anthony's parish and the Knights of Columbus.
Bobby is survived by his wife of 52 years, Carmen; his sons, Michael (Jenny) Delgado and David Delgado; his daughter, Teresa (Mark) Olsen; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; his sisters, Rosa and Linda; and his brother, Frank. He was preceded in death by his parents, Manuel and Josefina Delgado, and his brothers, Ray and Tony.
A Rosary will be held on Thursday, January 30, at 6:00 p.m., and a Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday, January 31, at 10:00 a.m., both at St. Anthony of Padua Church in Fresno. Burial will follow at Belmont Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Fresno Little League.
Bobby spent his life giving attention to the engines, the ballplayers, the neighbors, and the family who needed it. We'll miss the sound of him in the garage, at the grill, and somewhere in the middle of an Elvis song.
