📯 THE BRIARWATCH BELLOW

All the News That's Fit to Shout from the Well-House Steps

Rain-Soaked Edition · A Wet Evening in the Season of Storms The Drowned Crown · Velmara · Session 7

🗞️ STRANGERS ARRIVE IN RAIN; MAYOR'S POCKETS LIGHTENED (BRIEFLY); WELL SPEAKS

BRIARWATCH: Good people of Briarwatch, lock your shutters and hold your purses. Adventurers have come to town.

The party of four squelched through the gates at dusk, soaked to the bone in the evening downpour, and made straight for the inn. Within the hour, this paper's sources witnessed the halfling Pip Underbough slip a nimble hand into the coat of none other than Mayor Holloway himself. Pip was caught in the act. Then came what our tavern correspondent calls "the smoothest talking this side of the coast." Pip persuaded the Mayor that the whole affair was a security test. The Mayor not only believed it but now appears to trust the halfling. Briarwatch's civic leadership offered no further comment.

The newcomers soon met Old Marta, the town herbalist. She gave them the grim news this paper has been shouting for days: the town well turned black three days past, and two of Briarwatch's children fell ill. Your Bellow is happy to report the little ones are recovering. Some of the thanks goes to the dwarven cleric Brother Odo, who lent his healing hands to their bedsides.

Overnight, the tiefling Seraphine was seen keeping her own counsel. Word around the inn is that something whispered to her in the dark. She has told no one what was said.

Then came the cellar. Beneath the well house, the party met four giant rats and a seething rat swarm. Paladin Thorne Ashvale stood in front and fell to the floor in the thick of the fight. Brother Odo answered with a quick word of healing and had him back on his feet. The vermin were dealt with, and the cellar gave up a modest hoard: coin, a potion, and a silver locket engraved "E.V."

And now, dear readers, the part your crier can barely bring himself to shout.

As the party stood by the well, a voice rose from the black water far below. It was not a rat. It was not an echo.

It called Thorne by his full name.

Sleep well, Briarwatch. If you can.

🌟 PARTY SPOTLIGHTS

⚔️ Thorne Ashvale, Human Paladin Thorne stood at the front of the rat-cellar fight like a proper shield should, and he paid for it. He was knocked flat before Brother Odo's healing brought him back. He walked out with a potion of healing for his trouble. When the well itself spoke his full name, Thorne answered with a quip instead of a quiver. That is the kind of nerve this town could use.

🗝️ Pip Underbough, Halfling Rogue This paper does not condone the picking of mayoral pockets. It does, however, admire a recovery. Caught red-handed, Pip talked their way into the Mayor's good graces with a "security test" so convincing that Holloway now seems to trust the halfling. Pip also pocketed the mysterious "E.V." locket from the cellar. Keep an eye on your purses, citizens. Then keep the other eye on Pip.

🔮 Seraphine, Tiefling Warlock The quietest guest at the inn may carry the loudest secret. Seraphine's patron whispered to her in the night, and whatever it said, she is keeping it locked behind those knowing eyes. Briarwatch's gossips are beside themselves. Your crier respects a woman who can keep a secret in a town that cannot.

🙏 Brother Odo, Dwarf Cleric If Briarwatch hands out a hero's medal this season, put the dwarf at the front of the line. Brother Odo eased the suffering of the town's two sick children. Then, in the rat-cellar, he brought Thorne back from the brink with a word of healing just in time. Two rescues in one rain-soaked visit. Somebody buy this cleric an ale.
