Starter Chart of Accounts: Mobile Dog Grooming

Assumptions

  • Structure: Single-member LLC in Ohio, USA. Equity accounts are set up for one owner using US terms.
  • Employees: You have one part-time hourly bather, so payroll liability and payroll expense accounts are included.
  • Van and equipment: You own a van with a loan. Your grooming setup (tub, dryers, generator, water tanks) is assumed to be business equipment, so fixed asset, depreciation, and loan accounts are included.
  • Prepaid packages: Clients who prepay for 5 grooms are paying for work you haven't done yet. A liability account holds that money until each groom is delivered.
  • Inventory and sales tax: You said you have no real inventory for resale, so inventory accounts are under "Add later if needed." Sales tax is also listed there. Your accountant can confirm whether any of your sales need sales tax.
  • Supplies as Cost of Sales: Shampoo, disposables, and water/generator costs are used directly on each groom. They are grouped as Cost of Sales so you can see your cost per groom. Your bookkeeper may prefer to treat them as regular operating expenses instead. Either choice works.

How the numbering works

Range Section
1000–1999 Assets (what the business owns)
2000–2999 Liabilities (what the business owes)
3000–3999 Equity (your stake in the business)
4000–4999 Income (money earned from clients)
5000–5999 Cost of Sales (direct costs of each groom)
6000–7999 Operating Expenses (costs of running the business)
8000–8999 Other Income and Other Expenses (interest, gains/losses)

Accounts go up by 10 (6010, 6020, 6030…), which leaves room to add new accounts in the right place later without renumbering.
