Intro
This Meridian family of four, a couple with two teenagers, loved their home but not their kitchen. The 1990s layout felt dark and closed in, and there was no good spot for the kids to do homework or for everyone to eat together. They asked us for two things: a more open feel and a big island at the center of family life.
The Before
The kitchen had the classic look of its era: honey oak cabinets, laminate counters, and one small window doing its best to light the whole room. Years of use had taken a toll. The laminate was peeling near the sink, which looked tired and was hard to keep clean. A half wall between the kitchen and dining room blocked the view and made both rooms feel smaller. Whoever was cooking was cut off from everyone else.
The Challenge
Taking out that half wall was the key to the whole project, so we did it carefully. First we checked with an engineer to confirm the wall was non-load-bearing, meaning it wasn't holding up any part of the house. Once it was cleared for removal, we rerouted an electrical outlet and a heating duct that ran through it, so nothing was lost when the wall came out.
We also found a surprise. When we pulled out the old sink cabinet, we discovered old water damage in the subfloor, the structural layer of wood under the finished floor. We cut out the damaged section and replaced it with new material. That way the new cabinets and flooring sit on a solid, dry base.
The Work
- Cabinets to the ceiling: New white shaker cabinets (a simple, timeless door style with a flat center panel and a square frame). Taking them all the way up adds storage and removes the dusty gap above.
- Quartz countertops: A Calacatta-look quartz with the soft, veined style of marble. Quartz is an engineered stone that doesn't need sealing like natural marble.
- A 7-foot island: Seating for four, sized for homework, quick breakfasts, and family dinners.
- Flooring: Luxury vinyl plank (LVP), a durable, water-resistant floor with a wood look, run continuously through the kitchen and dining room so the two spaces read as one.
- Lighting: Recessed LED lights in the ceiling for even, bright light, plus three pendant lights over the island.
- Sink and faucet: A new undermount sink (mounted below the counter, so crumbs wipe straight in) with a pull-down faucet.
The job took about five weeks. To keep the family going during construction, we set them up with a working fridge and microwave in the garage.
The After
The biggest change is the light. With the wall gone, white cabinets, and layered lighting, the kitchen feels bright from morning to night. The person at the stove can now see straight into the dining room, so cooking doesn't mean missing the conversation. The island has become the family's gathering spot for homework, snacks, and meals. And under it all is a new floor built on a sound subfloor.
What the Client Said
"It honestly doesn't feel like the same house. The crew was respectful of our family the whole time and the island is where everyone hangs out now." – Megan R., Meridian
