Your Conversation Prep: Getting the $600 Back from Jordan (and Keeping the Friendship)

1. Your goal in one line

I want Jordan and me to agree on a clear plan to repay the $600, even in small chunks, and clear the air so we can go back to being normal.

Success looks like:

  • You leave with a specific amount and a specific date for the first payment, e.g. "$100 by [date], then $100 on the 1st of each month."
  • Jordan says out loud that he knows the money needs to come back.
  • Minimum acceptable outcome: He agrees to a firm date this week to settle the plan, like "Let's figure out the numbers by Sunday."

What this conversation is NOT about:

  • His concert tickets and weekend trip. You can feel what you feel about them, but leading with them turns this into a debate about how he spends money.
  • Whether he's a "good friend" overall. This is about one loan, not eight years of friendship.

Assumptions I made: The $600 was a verbal agreement with nothing in writing. "A couple of months" meant roughly May. You haven't directly asked for it yet, only hinted. You'd accept repayment through cash or a payment app.

2. Before you talk

  • Pick a calm, unrushed moment. His place on a weekend afternoon or a quiet weeknight works well. If you go to a bar, pick a quiet one, go early, and have the talk before the second drink. Avoid times when he's tired, stressed, or with other people around.
  • Do it in person, as you planned. Don't open the topic by text. A short text to set it up is fine: "Hey, can we grab a drink Thursday? Want to catch up."
  • Have your facts ready: $600, borrowed in [month/date in March], for car repairs, and the agreement was "a couple months." Know your rent date: [date your rent buffer needs to be back in place].
  • Decide your proposal before you go. For example: $100 a month for 6 months, or $150 a month for 4 months. Know the smallest chunk you'd accept, e.g. $50 every two weeks.
  • Memorize this one sentence: "I need the $600 back, and I'd love for us to agree on a plan tonight, even if it's small amounts."
  • Watch the over-apologizing. You're allowed to ask for your own money back. Allow yourself one "sorry this is awkward" at most. After that, swap "sorry" for "honestly" or "look." If you hear yourself apologizing, stop and say your core sentence again.
  • Plan your anti-cave move. If you feel "never mind, it's fine" coming, take a sip of your drink or a breath and say: "Actually, it does matter to me."
  • Calm yourself first. Before you walk in, take three slow breaths. Remind yourself: "I'm doing this because I want to stay friends with him." That's true, and it'll show.

3. Opening lines (pick one)

Gentle: "Jordan, there's something I've been sitting on, and I'd rather just say it than keep being weird about it. It's the $600 from March. Can we talk about it for a minute?"

Direct: "Hey, I need to bring up the $600 I lent you for the car. I need it back, and I want us to figure out a plan tonight."

Collaborative: "I want to sort out the car money with you so it's not hanging over us. Can we work out a payback plan together that actually works for you?"

4. Your core script

Key message: "In March I lent you $600 for the car, and we said you'd pay it back in a couple of months. It's July now, and every time I've hinted, it's gotten brushed off. I need that money for my rent cushion, and honestly it's been sitting between us. I'd really like us to agree on a payback plan, even small amounts."

Supporting points:

  • "I was glad to help. I'd do it again. That's not the issue."
  • "I've been hinting instead of just asking. That's on me, so I'm asking clearly now."
  • "It's not a gift. I need it back because that money is my rent safety net."
  • "Small chunks are totally fine. I just need it to be regular and on a set date."
  • "I've been a bit distant lately, and this is why. I don't want that to keep happening."

Your ask: "Could you do $[100] a month, starting [date, e.g. August 1st], until it's paid off?"

Fallback if he says he can't: "Okay, what can you do? Even $[50] every two weeks works. I just need a first payment date we both stick to."

Acknowledge his side: "I know car repairs wrecked your budget back then, and I'm not trying to make you feel bad. I just need us to get this sorted."

5. If they say... you can say...

If they say or do What's likely behind it You can say
Laughs it off or jokes ("Ha, my loan shark's here!") Embarrassment. Joking is how he's dodged it before. "Ha, I know. But I'm actually serious this time. Can we work out a plan?"
"I thought you didn't need it back." A real misunderstanding, or a way out of the awkwardness. "I can see how my hinting made it unclear. To be clear now, it was a loan, and I do need it back. Can we set up a plan?"
"Wow, so you're keeping score?" Feeling judged or ashamed. "It's not about keeping score. It's one specific loan, and I need it for rent. I'd rather say it straight than let it get weird between us."
You feel yourself about to say "never mind, it's fine" Wanting the discomfort to end, plus your habit of smoothing things over. Pause, breathe, then: "Actually, no. It does matter to me. Let's just pick a number and a date."
"Things are really tight for me right now." This may well be true. "I hear you, and small is fine. What could you realistically do each month? Even $50 helps."
Counter-accusation: "You've been ignoring my calls." Hurt, and a fair point. "You're right, I have, and I'm sorry. This is why. I didn't know how to bring it up. That's why I want to clear it now."
Goes quiet or looks upset Shame or feeling put on the spot. "Hey, I'm not mad at you. Take a second. I just want us to sort this out and get back to normal."
**Agrees too fast: "Yeah, yeah
