1. Teacher Notes
- Topic: The water cycle
- Grade: 4th grade science
- Total questions: 16 (10 multiple choice, 4 matching items, 2 short answer)
- Suggested time: About 20 minutes
- Total points: 20
- Multiple choice: 1 point each (10 points)
- Matching: 1 point each (4 points)
- Short answer: 3 points each (6 points)
Learning goals covered:
- Name and describe the stages of the water cycle: evaporation, condensation, precipitation and collection.
- Explain the sun's role in heating water and turning it into water vapor.
- Recognize transpiration as a way plants release water vapor.
- Understand that the water cycle has no beginning or end and that the same water is used over and over.
- Explain why the water cycle matters for people.
Assumptions:
- Every question is based only on your lesson notes. I did no outside research.
- The matching set uses the four main stages (evaporation, condensation, precipitation, collection). Transpiration is tested in multiple choice instead (Q8).
- For your ELL students, I kept the questions and options to short, simple sentences and used the same words as your notes.
- Your notes don't say why the water cycle matters for people. So the model answer for Q16 links your notes (rain and snow refill lakes, rivers and underground water) to the everyday fact that people need water. Please change it if your class talked about other reasons.
Quick tips:
- Q1–Q4 make a good warm-up the next day. Q10 works well as a one-question exit ticket.
- ELL support (optional): Write this sentence starter on the board for Q16: "The water cycle matters for people because ______." You could also let ELL students point to the vocabulary words on a word wall while they answer Q15.

10. Which sentence about the water cycle is true?
A) It starts in the ocean and ends in the clouds. B) The same water is used over and over. C) New water is made every time it rains. D) It happens only once and then stops.
Part 2: Matching
Write the letter of the correct meaning on the line next to each word.
| Word | Meaning |
|---|---|
| 11. _____ Evaporation | A. Water gathers in oceans, lakes, rivers, and underground. |
| 12. _____ Condensation | B. Water vapor cools and turns into tiny droplets. |
| 13. _____ Precipitation | C. The sun heats water, and it turns into water vapor. |
| 14. _____ Collection | D. Water falls as rain, snow, sleet, or hail. |
Part 3: Short Answer
Write your answer in complete sentences.
15. Tell how water from a lake can become rain. Use these words: evaporation, condensation, precipitation.
16. Why does the water cycle matter for people? Give at least one reason.

3. Answer Key
| # | Correct Answer | Why (one sentence) | Skill Checked |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | B | The sun heats the water and it turns into water vapor (evaporation). | Recall: evaporation |
| 2 | A | Your notes say the sun heats the water in oceans, lakes and rivers. | Recall: the sun's role |
| 3 | C | Water vapor rises, cools and turns into tiny droplets (condensation). | Understanding: sequence |
| 4 | D | Clouds form from tiny water droplets; "warm water vapor" targets the common mix-up with vapor. | Recall: condensation and clouds |
